After Effects Tutorial – Aero Compass

Here’s how to use the standard toolkit in After Effects to create a fairly realistic flight instrument. Easy to customise and keyframe for your own needs. You can also download the After Effects CS5 project file for it from here.

NOTE: It has already been pointed out to me that the ball compass isn’t really used in airplane instrumentation – it’s more of a boat thing. Which is why I’ve added an attitude indicator / artificial horizon to the project file.

Cheers!

After Effects Tutorial – Satellite Tracking Display

I recently received a request from a viewer asking me if I could replicate the kind of satellite tracking display found in the Modern Warfare series of games. CHALLENGE ACCEPTED.

Using a combination of dashed lines, shape layers and opacity expressions, I like to think that I came pretty damn close to the original. So, if you’re creating an epic war movie, then maybe you might want to watch this tutorial to see how I did it – or of course you could just download the project file from this page.

Cheers!

After Effects Tutorial – Christmas Greetings 2011

So this year’s free festive-themed After Effects tutorial is a little different from last year’s, but still needs no plug-ins (so you can save your money and spend it on beer and chocolates instead!)
Had a lot of fun putting this one together. Hope you enjoy watching it.

And here’s part 2

Project file can be downloaded from here. If you use it, be nice and give me a shout-out.
Cheers!

After Effects Tutorial – Tarmac Titles

I know – I was supposed to be doing a kinetic typography tutorial next, but I have the attention span of a goldfish.
This was one of those ‘I wonder if…’ moments, and the only way to get rid of those nagging thoughts is to see where they lead.

In this case, it lead to a quick and easy method of creating a tarmac / asphalt text using fractal noise (it’s amazing how useful that effect can be), with a street marking-style title.

You’ll find the project file for it here.
